Science and Research
Every EXI prescription is based on the latest clinical evidence and guidelines including the World Health Organization (WHO), National Institute for Health and Care Evidence (NICE), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) & Exercise is Medicine®.
Instantly collating and applying pertinent evidence and data for each individual, EXI is the SaMD – software as a medical device – that delivers safe, effective, personalised physical activity prescriptions.
Physical Activity work
There is overwhelming evidence that any physical activity is beneficial for both physical and mental health. Additionally, for individuals with long-term health conditions, there is global scientific and medical consensus that the benefits of increasing physical activity far outweigh the risks. As a result, a progressive activity programme that’s tailored to individual health and fitness conditions – incorporating aerobic and strengthening exercises and reducing sedentary time – is recommended by every major health body as a safe, effective strategy to reduce morbidity and mortality and improve quality of life for those with long-term conditions.
Digital Interventions work
Not only are digital interventions highly scalable, they are also perceived by multiple populations to be both useful and acceptable. Systematic reviews of digital interventions indicate that physical activity levels, motivation and intention to exercise – as well as awareness of physical activity goals – all increase following the use of apps to support behaviour change. Further systematic review evidence shows that interventions using physical activity tracking are safe and effective at increasing physical activity at a clinically significant level, across a wide range of age groups and clinical and non-clinical populations.
We explore the latest theoretical perspectives and cutting-edge research to identify clusters of behaviour change techniques that are shown to be most effective in changing behaviour and engaging individuals with digital interventions. We build these into EXI to maximise adherence and positive health outcomes.
We partner with healthcare providers and academic institutions to demonstrate the clinical and economic impact of EXI.
Where we are not bound by a confidentiality agreement, we are happy to share high-level details of the studies.
Created by experts, backed by science
Our expert team rigorously examine the most up-to-date evidence and clinical guidance and embed it within the EXI platform. This is combined with analysis and application of powerful behaviour change techniques to maximise adherence and positive health outcomes.

Clinical results that can scale:
We’re committed to ongoing trials and research, continually strengthening our evidence base in partnership with multiple clinical and academic institutions. We’re proving that digital prescription of physical activity is an exact science: a targeted yet scalable means to improve population health.
In clinical trials, results achieved by EXI members after 12 weeks include:
A real world evaluation of the implementation of EXI into existing multi-disciplinary weight management services for severe obesity. A study run collaboratively by EXI and Barts & Bedfordshire NHS Trusts
This is a pragmatic evaluation seeking to capture the impact of EXI when deployed in the real world. Hence there is no control group, as all patients were offered EXI. The primary outcomes are change in steps and activity minutes over 12 weeks, but we are also looking at key health metrics, QOL & COM-B determinants of behaviour. The evaluation also includes a qualitative component to provide lived experience data.
Pre Cancer Surgery
EXI’s Exercise Intervention: Cancer Prehabilitation through Individualized Tracking and Encouragement (EXCITE Study). A study run by an independent university partner.
Draft protocol attached. This is a RCT examining the impact of both pre-hab and rehab for cancer surgery patients. We are currently finalising this protocol and may slightly slim down the list of outcome measures, but the aim is to provide rigorous clinical outcome data in an adequately powered cohort.
Post Cancer Surgery
A feasibility study of wearable technology-guided exercise preconditioning to accelerate return to function after cancer surgery. A study run by an independent university partner.
Study outcomes include average step count, enrolment rate, compliance with EXI application, compliance with exercise intervention, completion and dropout rate, patient reported outcomes measured at baseline and prior to surgery.
A digital incentive scheme to promote physical activity amongst people with type 2 diabetes. A study run by an independent university partner.
The service will have two intervention arms: ‘Claim your Watch’ (prescription adherence = points towards the cost of the watch provided at the start of the service), and ‘Earn with Watch’ (prescription adherence = points towards a choice of rewards, for those who already have a wearable when they enter the service), along with a control arm who will receive usual care.
Exercise is Medicine
Evaluation of the integration of EXI into an existing community Exercise Is Medicine programme. A study run collaboratively by Mason University and Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center, Virginia.
This will be another pragmatic evaluation, primarily assessing change over time. 1. Usual EIM programme, 2. EIM with EXI and Apple watch, 3. EIM with EXI app, and 4. EXI app only (no EIM).
Real World Evidence
EXI is committed to ongoing scientific research, advancing digital health, empowering healthcare professionals to reinvent the management of long-term medical conditions.
We are proud to partner with innovative, forward-thinking researchers and clinicians to demonstrate the clinical value of the platform and its real-world integration into the health ecosystem.Partner with EXI
